ZAP Surgical Systems, the San Carlos, California-based maker of the ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform, has secured $36 million in financing led by Catalio Capital Management. Baheal, ZAP’s strategic partner in China, also continued its support. Catalio’s Nicholas von Guionneau, M.D., Ph.D., joins ZAP’s board as an observer.

The capital will fund global expansion of ZAP-X across academic medical centers, community hospitals, and physician-led practices. ZAP recently shipped its 50th system and is scaling production to meet demand. The company reports nearly 10,000 patients treated worldwide with the platform, which targets brain tumors and other neurological conditions.
The release also points to a second area of development. ZAP and collaborators have studied targeted low-dose radiation as a way to modulate brain activity, which they call radiomodulation. Preliminary data were recently reported from a first-in-human pilot in patients with severe treatment-resistant depression, and broader multi-center trials are planned for psychiatric disorders, beginning with depression and addiction. These results are early and have not yet gone through peer review.
For ZAP, the round adds a new investor alongside an existing strategic partner as it pushes adoption in the U.S. and beyond. Von Guionneau said “intelligent robotics will play an indispensable role” in lowering costs while raising the standard of care.
For the broader MedTech space, the deal fits a pattern of capital flowing into neurotechnology, including large rounds this fall for brain-computer interface and brain-stimulation companies.
