Stryker and CMR Surgical have announced a strategic alliance built around an approximately $400 million (£300 million) preferred equity investment by Stryker in the Cambridge, England-based robotics company. The deal also gives Stryker an exclusive option to acquire 100% of CMR’s outstanding equity in the future, subject to the agreement’s terms. Alongside the investment, Stryker becomes the exclusive U.S. sales agent for CMR’s Versius portfolio, while CMR continues to lead development and commercialization outside the United States. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The alliance marks Stryker’s entry into soft-tissue surgical robotics, a category separate from the orthopedic robotics where it is best known. Andy Pierce, Stryker’s group president for MedSurg and Neurotechnology, called the move “a thoughtful and disciplined entry” after years of evaluating the segment. Pierce will also join CMR’s board. The companies describe Versius as a modular platform designed to help hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers expand robotic programs within existing operating room workflows.
For CMR, the deal brings capital for continued innovation along with Stryker’s scale and customer relationships in the U.S. For the broader MedTech space, it adds to a run of large strategic moves in surgical robotics, including Medtronic’s $700 million partnership with Cornerstone Robotics and Enovis’s agreement to acquire eCential Robotics, as established companies pursue robotics through investment, distribution, and acquisition rather than internal builds alone.
