Enovis has entered a binding offer to acquire surgical robotics developer eCential Robotics for €155 million ($180 million), plus up to €35 million ($41 million) in milestone payments. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

The deal marks Enovis' entry into surgical robotics, a category where competitors including Stryker, Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Synthes, and Zimmer Biomet have long had in-house systems. CEO Damien McDonald told investors the company plans to bring a next-generation robot to market within two years, starting in the knee, where he said "the form factor and product requirements are well understood by the market and eCential already has a validated technology," followed by a shoulder offering.
eCential's Op.n platform is an implant-agnostic navigation system combining real-time navigation, robotic guidance, and 3D imaging; the company previously partnered with DePuy Synthes on the Velys Spine robotic system, cleared by the FDA in 2024. McDonald said the acquired technology will integrate into Enovis' existing Astra ecosystem, which includes the Arvis augmented-reality guidance headset and Astra Portal planning software, so surgeons work within a single connected workflow rather than switching between systems.
For the broader orthopedics space, the acquisition continues a wave of consolidation around robotics and enabling technology, as companies compete to offer surgeons integrated planning, navigation, and robotic capabilities across hospitals, outpatient clinics, and ambulatory surgery centers. As part of the agreement, the combined companies will build a robotics center of excellence in Grenoble, France.
