Finnish medtech company Maculaser has closed a €4.4 million (roughly $5 million) funding round, following a first close announced in May. ZEISS Ventures and M2care co-led the round, joined by Innovestor, Metsola Ventures, and existing shareholders, plus non-dilutive R&D funding from Business Finland. Total funding since the company's founding now stands at €7.6 million (approximately $8.8 million).

The capital will fund clinical studies of Maculaser's temperature-controlled retinal laser therapy, designed to treat age-related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases without damaging surrounding tissue. The goal is to intervene earlier in disease progression, before the retinal damage that current treatments often can't reverse.

Two strategic backers stand out here. ZEISS Ventures brings ties to an established ophthalmic device manufacturer, while M2care focuses specifically on medtech and healthtech investments, suggesting both see a fit between Maculaser's laser platform and existing retinal care infrastructure. The Business Finland grant adds a public R&D layer alongside the private capital, common for Nordic medtech companies moving from device development into clinical validation.

Retinal disease treatment has drawn steady investor interest as the population ages, with companies across the space looking for ways to catch disease earlier and reduce the burden of ongoing treatment. Maculaser's early-intervention approach fits that broader push toward disease control before it requires more invasive, long-term management.
