VS3 Medical's VS3 System earns FDA Breakthrough Device designation for pulsatile tinnitus

VS3 Medical, Inc., a privately held neurovascular implant developer, has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation for its investigational VS3 System, based on evidence suggesting the device can resolve debilitating pulsatile tinnitus caused by venous sinus stenosis. The California-based company was founded in 2022 by Matthew Amans, MD, professor of radiology and neurological surgery at UCSF, and is backed by investors including US Venture Partners, Santé Ventures, Gilde Healthcare, and Aperture Venture Partners.

The self-expanding VS3 Stent is designed to conform to the venous sinus and provide sufficient radial force to open both intrinsic and extrinsic stenoses, narrowing of the brain's main venous drainage pathways that can cause a persistent, pulse-synchronous "whooshing" sound in one or both ears. A dedicated delivery system is designed to navigate the venous sinus anatomy and position the stent precisely. In an earlier first-in-human feasibility study conducted at sites in Canada and Australia, all enrolled patients reportedly experienced resolution of pulsatile tinnitus symptoms immediately following the procedure and were discharged neurologically intact within 24 hours.

For VS3 Medical, the designation provides a faster, more collaborative FDA review pathway as the company advances toward broader clinical evidence and eventual market authorization. For the broader MedTech space, it adds to growing attention on a historically underdiagnosed condition: the FDA has now granted breakthrough designation to more than one device targeting pulsatile tinnitus this year, including a competing stent system from Sonorous, reflecting increased recognition of venous sinus stenosis as a treatable anatomical cause rather than a symptom to simply live with.

Dr. Amans said the designation reflects "the FDA's recognition of pulsatile tinnitus as a debilitating condition."
