Novocure has successfully secured CE mark approval in Europe for its Optune Pax device, a wearable system designed to treat adults with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The portable device works by delivering noninvasive, alternating electrical fields- known as Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) - directly to the tumor site. These specialized fields target and disrupt the division and survival of cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.
The regulatory milestone follows a pivotal Phase 3 study called the PANOVA-3 trial, which demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in median overall survival for patients when the device was used alongside standard chemotherapy. Additionally, clinical data indicated that the treatment successfully delayed pain progression, offering a meaningful quality-of-life benefit for a notoriously aggressive disease that has seen low survival rates for decades.
With this European clearance locked in, the Switzerland-based company plans to launch the device commercially in Germany in the coming weeks. The platform is also actively being evaluated in a separate trial for metastatic pancreatic cancer, building on a strong global momentum that already includes an active FDA approval in the United States and previous clearances for non-small cell lung cancer.
