From Prototype to Production: Digital Health Manufacturing Leader

From Prototype to Production: Digital Health Manufacturing Leader

A European digital health scale-up had developed a connected diagnostic platform combining wearable sensor technology, software, data capture and a service-based commercial model, designed to move specialist diagnostic testing from hospital to home. The business had reached an important inflection point: commercial traction established in key markets, a second-generation product in preparation, and manufacturing that now needed to shift from early-stage execution into higher-volume, cost-conscious, quality-driven delivery. The right person to lead that shift was not available locally.

Challenge

The search was difficult because the ideal candidate profile did not sit neatly inside traditional MedTech manufacturing. The client needed someone who understood regulated medical devices, but the real manufacturing challenge was closer to high-volume, electronics-enabled consumer health: wearable sensors, small electronic units, packaging, final testing, outsourced assembly and cost optimization.

Location added further complexity. The company was based in a smaller European technology hub, which limited the local candidate pool significantly. The most obvious local source was a major strategic, but the client did not want a large-company profile. They needed someone with a scale-up mindset: hands-on, pragmatic and comfortable building structure without corporate infrastructure behind them.

The role also required substantial third-party manufacturing experience. The successful candidate would need to manage external suppliers and contract manufacturers, support the transfer from R&D into production, improve SOPs and documentation, strengthen procurement and supplier terms, and build a team capable of delivering on volume, quality and cost reduction together.

Solution

Guided Solutions treated this as a hybrid search across MedTech, digital health, consumer electronics and outsourced manufacturing environments.

The target was not a classic plant manager, and not a corporate operations executive. The client needed a lead-and-do manufacturing leader: someone senior enough to set strategy, build a team and engage at leadership level, but still willing to get personally involved in documentation, supplier relationships, process improvement and day-to-day problem solving.

Because the local candidate pool was too narrow, the search was approached internationally, with a practical focus on candidates able to relocate or commute regularly to the company's European headquarters. This extended into adjacent industries where small electronics, wearable devices, contract manufacturing and cost-conscious growth were central to the role rather than incidental.

Candidate assessment focused on a clear set of criteria: the ability to manage contract manufacturer relationships, scale electronics-enabled devices from early production into meaningful volume, operate in a lean environment without corporate support, drive COGS reduction without compromising compliance, and build a small team with urgency and real ownership. Screening out candidates whose experience was too corporate or too theoretical mattered as much as identifying those with the right background.

Result

Guided Solutions initially identified a strong candidate in the United States. The candidate accepted the role, contract terms were agreed and a start date was confirmed. During the relocation process, however, he determined the move was not in his family's best interests.

Because the search had been properly mapped and managed internationally from the outset, Guided Solutions was able to move quickly rather than return to the start.

A second candidate was identified from Northern Europe. He had worked internationally throughout his career, was highly accustomed to relocation and brought the practical, hands-on mindset the role required. The process moved smoothly, the candidate relocated and onboarded successfully.

The appointment gave the client a manufacturing leader with the right mix of regulated-device awareness, contract manufacturing experience, electronics-enabled product knowledge and scale-up pragmatism. It supported the company's transition from early commercial traction into higher-volume production, and gave the leadership team greater confidence in supply chain readiness, manufacturing discipline and the successful transfer of the second-generation product into scalable production.

European Digital Health Scale-Up

"We knew what we needed but could not find it locally, and the profile was hard to explain to a generalist recruiter. Guided Solutions understood the brief immediately; the gap between what a regulated device environment demands and what a fast-moving scale-up actually looks like day to day. The person they found has hit the ground running."
