Bioventus Acquired BioStructures California-based Maker of Bioresorbable Bone Graft Products
Bioventus, a global leader in orthobiologic solutions, announced it has acquired BioStructures LLC, a proprietary developer and marketer of bioresorbable bone graft products for a broad range of spinal and orthopaedic surgical applications.Financial details were not disclosed and Bioventus executives were not immediately available for comment. The agreement includes the entire BioStructures portfolio of products as well as its research and development pipeline, according to a news release.Bioventus is approximately a £170 million annual business and BioStructures through the third quarter has revenue of just more than £6 million, according to a Bioventus spokesman. Bioventus was spun out of Smith & Nephew and has been a standalone entity since May 2012.Bioventus makes “bone stimulation devices” that help the body in orthopaedic healing. The company advertises its Exogen Ultrasound Bone Healing System, for example, as using ultrasound waves to help a body heal bone fractures.In 2014, Bioventus acquired the OsteoAMP product line, intellectual property and commercial business from Advanced Biologics.BioStructures is a medical device company focused on “improving bone regeneration and remodeling for related clinical procedures,” according to the release.“The acquisition of BioStructures aligns with our strategy to be a leader in orthobiologics, building on the launch of the Bioventus Surgical business with the OsteoAMP acquisition in 2014, and our longer term development of the next generation BMP,” said Tony Bihl, CEO of Bioventus. “This now gives Bioventus a broad offering of bone grafting solutions backed by clinical and technical data to benefit patients, surgeons, and hospitals.”
